A lot of front yards have that same problem - a sloped grade along the foundation that makes it nearly impossible to keep a clean planting bed. Soil washes out, plants get swallowed up, and the whole front of the house just looks unfinished. That's exactly what we were working with here in Independence.
We built a Techo-Bloc Mini Creta wall in Champlain Grey to hold the grade and create a defined raised bed along the full length of the foundation. The Champlain Grey colorway is a great choice for a brick home - it picks up the cool tones in the mortar without competing with the warm red of the brick. It just works.
What makes Techo-Bloc a go-to for us is the quality of the product. The tumbled texture gives it that natural stone look without the inconsistency and cost of natural stone. The units are dense, dimensionally consistent, and built to hold up through freeze-thaw cycles year after year. This isn't a wall that's going to shift and separate on you in five years.
Once the wall was set, we had a clean, level planting bed ready to go. Fresh soil, hostas planted along the base of the foundation - structured, simple, and sharp. The cap course ties the whole thing together and gives it that finished edge that really makes the difference between a wall that looks thrown together and one that looks intentional.
That's really the goal with hardscape work like this. It's not just about function - it's about making the whole front of the house look pulled together. A well-built retaining wall does both.
